The UK’s indigenous oil and gas resources need to form part of the country’s efforts to reduce emissions, according to offshore industry body Oil & Gas UK (OGUK), which also argues that the sector is well-placed to support emission reduction technologies and carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS). OGUK’s 2019 Economic Report argues that, by maximising production of indigenous resources and focusing upon the emissions intensity of the offshore industry, it can help to reduce the UK’s reliance on imported fuels while promoting energy security. Speaking on the release of the report, OGUK Chief Executive Deirdre Michie said that the offshore sector was “already playing an active role in the transition to a more diverse energy mix, with many of our members investing in renewables, developing new technologies and bringing new solutions to market”.
