ScottishPower has announced the launch of a tariff aimed at electric vehicle (EV) owners. Announced on Wednesday 30 January, the SmartPower Green EV January 2021 tariff is claimed to enable drivers to charge their car “at a 10th of the cost of petrol” through the use of off-peak electricity and ScottishPower’s smart EV charger. The one-tenth cost saving is based on a comparison of the electricity unit rate per mile (1.06p) and petrol cost per mile (11p) between a Hyundai Kona EV and Hyundai Kona petrol engine utilising off-peak charging between midnight and 5am at 4.736p/kWh. ScottishPower CEO Keith Anderson said that the company “wants to help customers benefit from EVs as quickly as possible as that will help improve air quality and cut carbon quicker. Helping cutting the cost of motoring will help people switch to EVs faster”.
