A study to examine the potential deployment of large-scale power-to-gas energy storage found four suitable locations in northern England. The research was funded by BEIS and conducted by Northern Gas Networks (NGN) and ITM Power, an energy storage and clean fuel company. Results were released on Tuesday 24 April. The study focused on deployments capable of operating cost-effectively from 50MW storage capacity upwards within the NGN boundary. Of the four locations identified, Low Thornley in Gateshead was recommended as the most suitable. Head of Systems Development and Energy Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, Keith Owen said: “This feasibility study shows the exciting potential of power-to-gas energy storage on our network […] we now look to practical implementation.”
