Interim Energy and Clean Growth Minister Chris Skidmore told the BEIS Committee that the five-year review of the 2050 net zero target could result in it being brought forward to 2045. During an evidence session on Tuesday 16 July, he said it could be brought forward if technologies advanced enough to make that feasible. He also said that a review would enable the UK to compare its progress internationally and to “keep up the pressure” on other countries’ ambitions. The government would take advice from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) at the five-year point, Director of Clean Growth at BEIS Tim Lord said. Lord also said that the CCC is due to provide advice on the third runway at Heathrow and on aviation more generally.
