Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long Bailey MP announced that the next Labour government will subsidise the purchase of new electric vehicles (EVs) when drivers trade in cars over 10 years old. Announced on Monday 23 September, the scheme will initially be available for one year and will aim to replace 400,000 conventional cars with new low-carbon EVs. To support business car fleets to go 100% electric by 2025, the party will also introduce incentives, such as removing the £320 Vehicle Excise Duty surcharge on EVs purchased for private fleet use above £40,000 for two years. Additionally, she added that the party “will also commit to making the entire government car fleet electric by 2025.” Labour also announced that it would invest £3.6bn into a significant expansion of the UK’s EV charging networks.
