Data published by trade body RenewableUK on Friday 18 January has revealed that installations of onshore wind capacity fell by 80% year on year in 2018 to the lowest level since 2011. Last year saw 598MW of new onshore wind installed, down from a record 2,666MW installed in 2017. RenewableUK attributed this downturn is due to government policy of blocking onshore wind from subsidy schemes. RenewableUK also found a generation gap of over 55TWh a year which needs to be filled by 2030, due to the closures of existing nuclear plants and other power stations in the 2020s.
