The Cornwall Local Energy Market (LEM) trial project run by Centrica has begun installing battery and solar technology in 100 homes across the county.

In an announcement made on Friday 21 September, the company described the move as “one of the most significant moments yet” for the £19mn project, which aims to test a virtual marketplace that will allow participants to trade energy and flexibility to the grid and wholesale energy market. Households will get free technologies to allow them to both generate and store electricity. The batteries will be controlled remotely to maximise their productivity and excess power will then be supplied to Distribution Network Operator Western Power Distribution and other participants when needed to help manage demand.
