The Lords voted to pass the Climate Change Act 2008 (2050 Target Amendment) Order 2019 by 155 to 116 on Wednesday 26 June. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for BEIS Lord Henley opened the debate for the government: “Today I believe that we can make history again as the first major economy in the world to commit to ending our contribution to global warming.” Labour’s Lord Grantchester welcomed the bill but concluded: “Net zero emissions by 2050 is an enormous aim, and it needs more than rhetoric to be realised. We need to develop alternative energy sources on a scale never seen before. The Government must urgently commit to a green industrial revolution and a transformation of energy in the UK, harnessing the resources of the state and the private sector to invest in the infrastructure.”
