BEIS intends to legislate to differentiate remote island wind (RIW) from other onshore wind to enable such projects to compete for a CfD in future “less established” Pot 2 auctions. The department issued part of its response to its December 2017 consultation on Wednesday 6 June. RIW projects must be over 5MW and at least 10km from shore. Also confirmed was that all new dedicated biomass plants with Combined Heat and Power seeking CfD contracts will require an overall efficiency of 70%, a primary energy saving of 10% and 10% heat efficiency. There will also be a change to the definition of waste to bring it in line with a new EU definition. The government intends to lay legislation in Parliament to implement these changes “shortly”.
