Car manufacturer Nissan and EDF Energy have announced a partnership that will explore combining recycled Nissan electric vehicle (EV) batteries with EDF Energy’s demand-side response platform, PowerShift. In an announcement made on Wednesday 10 October, the companies said that millions of second-life EV batteries could be used as commercial battery storage to supply electricity to the grid and cut the UK’s carbon emissions. The agreement also covers future collaboration on smart charging, batteries, decentralised generation and grid integration projects. Director of Energy Services at Nissan Europe Francisco Carranza said: “Our second-life programme ensures batteries from our cars continue to provide energy storage capacity in other applications […] long after their life in cars.”
