Drax has begun a bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) pilot at its power station at Selby in North Yorkshire. The BECCS pilot began on Monday 26 November, with the first carbon expected to be captured “in the coming weeks”. The six-month project has been designed in partnership with carbon capture specialist C-Capture to capture one tonne of carbon a day from the Selby coal and biomass plant. Drax said that it has invested £400,000 in the pilot, adding that it could be the first of many pilots to deliver BECCS demonstrations at the plant. Will Gardiner, CEO of Drax Group, said: “If this project is successful, it could enable Drax to become the world’s first carbon negative power station – something many would never have dreamed possible a decade ago.”
