A new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said that renewables will cover 40% of global energy consumption growth over the next five years and will account for almost a third of total world electricity generation in 2023.

Published on 8 October, it said that solar PV will dominate renewable electricity capacity expansion and wind will continue to grow, but highlighted bioenergy as the “overlooked giant” of renewables.

The IEA said that bioenergy would remain the largest source of renewable energy because of its widespread use in heat and transport and predicted that modern bioenergy would have the biggest growth in renewable resources from 2018-23.
