The Department for Transport (DfT) published a new aviation industry green paper, outlining future strategy for the sector. Released on Monday 17 December, Aviation 2050 — The Future of UK Aviation highlights various issues and opportunities in reducing the environmental impact of the aviation industry such as the potential development of hybrid and fully-electric aircraft. It also proposed negotiations with the UN for a long-term international aviation goal consistent with the Paris Agreement “ideally by 2022”. Additionally, the plan highlighted the development of a waste-to-renewables jet fuel plant. However, it rejected “unilateral, national level action” which could put UK airlines at a competitive disadvantage. A consultation seeking views on the proposed strategy has opened, due to close on 11 April 2019.
