Registrar society DNV GL published its Energy Transition Outlook 2019, providing an analysis of the future
of the world energy mix by 2050. The report, published on Wednesday 11 September, predicts that half of
passenger vehicles in 2032 will be electric; and this uptake will increase to 73% by 2050, with commercial
electric vehicles growth being more protracted. Moreover, electrification driven by innovation in renewables
is rapidly increasing, and is set to double by 2050; with 63% produced by solar PV and wind. Nonetheless,
despite these advances, DNV GL’s forecast indicates that the slow pace of the drop in emissions means
that the 1.5C budget will be exceeded in 2028 and the 2C exceeded in 2049.
